Mineral render

Quiet surfaces that take the colour of the light.

01Why

Mineral render, so that each upper volume reads as one calm, simple form above the stone.

Above the honey limestone, the upper volumes are rendered: one continuous mineral skin, with no ornament to interrupt it, so that each reads as a single form — the simple forms, enriched by their dialogue with the topography, of the project memory.

It is among the oldest gestures of building on the island: walls have been plastered in Cyprus since the Neolithic. A rendered wall above a base of stone is the plain grammar of Mediterranean houses, from the hill villages to the quietest modern ones.

Where the stone stops, the render begins. Below, the honey limestone is rooted in the slope; above, the rendered volumes sit lighter, set against the sky — two materials, and one clear line between the ground and the house.

Through the day the same wall changes with the light — cool in the morning, warm in the afternoon, almost rose at dusk. The material does nothing; the light does everything.
